Lady Elliot Island is the southernmost island of the Great Barrier Reef. It is a round and flat coral island ,surrounded by a reef and a lagoon incredibly rich in marine life. The reef, while preventing access by boat, is accessible through a small aircraft (30 minute flight) and the air approach is spectacular. The only hotel on the island is a clean 3 star, simply composed of small individual bungalows. Here, the key word is not luxury but the deep respect for nature. For those who like diving, corals and reef walls offer exceptional dive sites where you can see mantas (up to 4 meters in size), murenes, barracudas, white point sharks, etc. The dive sites are close, and no time is lost in long navigations for access.
Lady Elliot is just as suited for families with children because the reef can be explored on foot at low tide and the shallow lagoon provides an easy view, close to the beach, of a multitude of tropical fish, sea anemones, giant clams, starfishes, rays and turtles in the same season. In Lady Elliot, turtles come lay on the beach (sometimes very close to the bungalows) between November and February. The hatching of eggs occurs between February and April. The island is also a bird reserve which can be observed nesting. And from June to September, the whales are likely to be seen off the island. Here, the contact with nature is very exceptional !
